The High Court has upheld the death sentence of former police constable Abdul Alim Suman in a sensational case filed over the murder of his wife, Sumi Akter, committed due to dowry demands. The court also commuted the death sentence of another convict, Shamim Al Mamun, to life imprisonment.

According to case details, Abdul Alim married Sumi, daughter of Sultan Ahmed from Tangail Sadar, on May 6, 2011, while working in the industrial police. Out of a settled dowry of five thousand Taka, an amount of two lakh Taka remained unpaid, triggering continuous physical and mental torture by the husband. On April 20, 2012, Alim took his wife from her paternal home under the pretext of visiting the Bangabandhu Bridge area and subsequently strangled her to death with an orania (scarf) near the Turag Beribadh area in Dhaka with the assistance of Shamim Al Mamun.

 Following his arrest, Alim confessed to the crime before a magistrate. The High Court bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice K.M. Rashaduzzaman Raja delivered the verdict after hearing the death reference and appeals.
