Senior BNP leader and Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy stated on Wednesday that Bangladesh's cottage and handicraft sector holds greater income-generating potential than the readymade garment (RMG) industry if backed by effective training, public promotion, and structured marketing channels.
Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration of a five-day 'Sarat Mela' organized by the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) at its headquarters in the Tejgaon Industrial Area, Gayeshwar highlighted the inherent skill and artistry of domestic craftspersons. He noted that traditional items such as Nakshi Kantha from Jamalpur, Sheetalpati matting, terracotta, and pottery continue to command high market appeal as consumers globally lean back toward natural and heritage-driven products. Emphasizing the sector's crucial role in empowering marginalized women and boosting rural livelihoods, the BNP leader called for eliminating archaic bureaucratic delays in government offices to support small entrepreneurs. Furthermore, he addressed global environmental equity, asserting that developed nations responsible for the majority of historical industrial pollution must assume proportional accountability rather than imposing restrictive conditions on developing countries. BSCIC Chairman Benazir Ahmed presided over the opening ceremony, which was attended by Ministry of Industries Secretary Abdus Naser Khan and Additional Secretary Nuruzzaman.
