'Islamic Scholars and Madrasa Education Put on Trial Over Isolated Incidents': Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman Urges Caution

Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, asserted that the entire Islamic scholar community (Alem Samaj) and the madrasa education system are unfairly put on trial over isolated incidents.

Delivering his address as the chief guest at the National Mufassir Conference organized by Bangladesh Majlisul Mufassirin at the IDEB Auditorium in Kakrail, Dhaka on Saturday (October 3, 2026), Dr. Shafiqur Rahman urged religious scholars to maintain extreme caution and personal integrity. He emphasized that while mainstream colleges and universities do not operate explicitly under the banner of Islam, madrasas carry a sacred religious identity, making any moral shortcoming far more visible and subject to intense public scrutiny. "White cloth shows stains most easily; therefore, we must be extra vigilant," he remarked, drawing a parallel that the standard for Islamic institutions must trace back to the foundational ethics of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. He concluded by calling on scholars to lead transparent lives and uphold high ethical standards to safeguard the sanctity of religious education across the country.
