National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has demanded a brand-new Ganges Water Sharing Treaty with India rather than a simple renewal of the 1996 pact, insisting on a binding guarantee clause to ensure Bangladesh’s rightful share of transboundary river waters.

Addressing a memorial rally on Wednesday (October 7, 2026) at Palashi Intersection in Dhaka to mark the 7th death anniversary of BUET student Abrar Fahad, Nahid Islam emphasized that the 30-year Ganges treaty expiring this December must be renegotiated on the basis of equality and sovereignty. He stated that Farakka Barrage has historically been used to control water flow and exploit Bangladesh, calling on India and the interim government to establish fair water-sharing agreements for all common rivers, including the Teesta. Demanding that India share the burden of any dry-season water shortages equally, the NCP convener urged the government to ensure complete transparency regarding joint river flow data and transboundary river management. Nahid Islam also called for the immediate execution of death sentences handed down to Abrar Fahad's killers, urging the administration to protect national interests, defense, and resource sovereignty.
