Ensuring the rights, dignity, and security of minority communities is a shared constitutional responsibility of both the government and the opposition, stated Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
He made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon (October 14, 2026) during a press briefing at Minto Road in Dhaka, following an extensive consultation meeting between Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and top representatives of the country's Sanatan (Hindu) community. The meeting, held at the official residence of the Opposition Leader (No. 29 Minto Road), brought together leaders from major national organizations, including the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, Puja Udjapan Front, Jatiya Hindu Mohajote, and the Hindu Religious Welfare Trust.
During the briefing, Mia Golam Parwar highlighted that Hindu leaders appreciated the active role played by Jamaat activists in guarding temples and puja mandaps post-August 5. Addressing concerns regarding local discrimination and social grievances, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman assured the delegation that the opposition would continuously advocate for equal rights and security for all citizens. Parwar also reiterated Jamaat's stance on current constitutional reform initiatives, stating that the party will not submit recommendations to the Constitutional Reform Committee as it disagrees with the current process, warning that amendments ignoring opposition views will lack public acceptability.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Hindu community ahead of Sharadiya Durga Puja, senior advocate Subrata Chowdhury welcomed the initiative. He urged that calls for communal harmony be regularly disseminated by Muslim religious leaders during Friday sermon (khutba) discourses to build genuine, lasting interfaith harmony across Bangladesh.
