Dhak Drums, Sindur Khela, and Tearful Farewells: Goddess Durga Immersed in the Ocean
Devotees immerse an idol of Goddess Durga in the Bay of Bengal at Laboni Point on Cox's Bazar beach amidst joyous celebrations and tearful farewells.

Amidst the beat of dhak drums, ululations, Sindur Khela, and the excitement of thousands of devotees, the resonance of farewell filled the air. Overpowering the colors of joy, a shade of melancholy was visible on the faces of the devotees. On one hand was the excitement to capture the final moments of the festival, and on the other was the emotion of bidding farewell to Mother Durga. In such an emotionally charged and festive atmosphere, the idol of Goddess Durga was immersed in the waters of the Bay of Bengal at Cox's Bazar beach.

On Wednesday (October 21) afternoon, hundreds of thousands of devotees gathered at Laboni Point on Cox's Bazar beach. A large number of tourists also crowded the sandy shore to witness the spectacle. Devotees marched toward the ocean with the idols to the beat of drums and ululations. With the immersion, the grand festivities of the Bengali Hindu community's primary religious festival, Sharadiya Durga Puja, came to a formal close.

From the morning, preparations for the farewell were underway across the puja mandaps. After welcoming the Goddess, devotees offered prayer at her feet with vermilion for the final time. They then smeared vermilion on each other's foreheads and cheeks, exchanging Bijoya greetings. Through music, dance, and laughter, they shared the last moments of the festival. However, beneath the jubilation lay the sorrow of departure. As they bade farewell to their beloved Goddess, sadness surfaced on the faces of many devotees. Their prayers held a single expectation—that Mother Durga would return to Earth again next year, bringing back these joyful days.

The immersion created a festive atmosphere across Cox's Bazar city and nearby upazilas. People from Muslim and other religious communities joined in the joy of the Hindu community's religious festival, transforming the entire beach area into a vibrant gathering of mutual harmony and brotherhood. Tourists thronged Laboni Point to witness the immersion. The ocean waves, crowds on the sandy shore, and the immersion rituals created a deeply moving scene.

Prior to the immersion, a discussion meeting was organized at the Bijoya stage at 4:00 PM. Presided over by the Acting President of the Cox's Bazar District Puja Udjapan Parishad, Uday Shankar Pal Mithu, the event was addressed by State Minister for Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mir Helal Uddin, District BNP President and Cox's Bazar-4 MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, Cox's Bazar-3 MP Lutfur Rahman Kajol, Reserved Women's Seat MP Adv. Shamim Ara Shopna, District Commissioner Md. A. Mannan, Superintendent of Police A N M Sazedur Rahman, and leaders of the Hindu community.

Acting President Uday Shankar Pal Mithu stated that Durga Puja was celebrated across 324 mandaps in Cox's Bazar district without any untoward incidents. Among them, 155 conducted idol worship while 169 held Ghat Puja. Following the rituals, at least 400 idols were immersed at Cox's Bazar sea beach starting Wednesday afternoon. With the departure of Goddess Durga, the autumn festival concluded, leaving behind memories, bonds of harmony, and the eager hope to welcome the Goddess again next year: "Asche Bocheor Abar Hobe" (It will happen again next year).
