Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has acknowledged that discussions regarding team changes and tactical overhauls are entirely justified following Australia’s 2-1 Test series defeat to South Africa, urging critics and supporters to grant the management a few weeks to restructure the side.
Prior to travelling to South Africa, Australia held the top spot on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table. However, following a heavy 176-run defeat in the third and final Test, combined with their previous 1-1 draw against Bangladesh, Australia slipped to third place (69.23% PCT) for the first time in the current cycle. Meanwhile, Temba Bavuma's South African side surged to second place (71.42% PCT), leaving New Zealand at the summit with 72.22% PCT.

It’s fair—we’ve lost two matches in a row. We are a genuinely good team, but to return to the number one spot, we have to improve. That might mean tweaking our tactical approach or making personnel changes in certain positions. Give us a few weeks, and we will sort things out."
The final Test in South Africa saw Australia fail to chase a target of 288 runs on Day 5 after South African speedster Kagiso Rabada blew away the top order—dismissing Matt Renshaw (0), Marnus Labuschagne (4), and Travis Head (14)—before spinner Simon Harmer dismantled the middle and lower order with a lethal 6-wicket haul. Cummins lightheartedly quipped that Australia effectively lost the Test match in Rabada’s very first over.
