LPG Gas Selling Above BERC Price Cap Nationwide; 12-Kg Cylinders Fetching Up to ৳2,350
Energy market regulators and distribution networks addressing pricing irregularities and supply chain bottlenecks in Bangladesh.

Despite the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) fixing the retail price of a 12-kg LPG cylinder at ৳2,060 (up from ৳1,585 in September following two price hikes of ৳252 and ৳223), severe price distortion persists across the country. In Dhaka markets, 12-kg cylinders are selling for up to ৳2,350, while in regional centers like Rangpur, retail prices range between ৳2,250 and ৳2,300.

Distributors from the LPG Gas Business Co-operative Society, led by Organizational Secretary Abu Taher Qureshi and Joint Organizational Secretary Moni Mukta Paul, met with the BERC Chairman and submitted a formal written complaint with evidence detailing widespread malpractices by major importers. The association revealed that while distributors are supposed to procure 12-kg cylinders at ৳1,905, major importers—including JMI, Euro LPG, G Gas, Jamuna LPG, and Beximco—are charging between ৳2,190 and ৳2,300. Crucially, importers are issuing official cash memos for the BERC rate of ৳1,905 while forcing distributors to transfer the excess money into secondary accounts. Evidence of these transactions has also been submitted to the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP).

Market instability stems from the post-August 5 political shift, during which major importers like Beximco, Orion, and Bashundhara scaled back operations, shifting import concentration to East Coast Group, United Group, Energypack, Jamuna Spacetech, and BM LPG. This consolidation created a bottleneck and left approximately 1.5 crore (15 million) cylinders of non-importing companies stranded. At a recent BERC public hearing, Orion LPG COO Anik Kumar Sen proposed allowing active importers to supply gas through existing idle cylinder networks on a commission basis to alleviate market shortages.
