An unusual surge in unit prices and trading volumes of two listed mutual funds—Phoenix Finance 1st Mutual Fund and Prime Finance 1st Mutual Fund—has sparked curiosity and concern among investors on the Dhaka and Chittagong Stock Exchanges (DSE and CSE).

Following the unexplained price movements, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) issued official inquiry letters to both asset management companies on September 22, requesting disclosures regarding any undisclosed Price Sensitive Information (PSI). On Wednesday (September 23, 2026), official notifications on the DSE and CSE websites revealed that both asset managers responded stating they possess no undisclosed PSI or operational shifts capable of triggering the price surge.

DSE data shows that Phoenix Finance 1st Mutual Fund's unit price surged by 117.65% over three months, rising from BDT 8.50 on June 24 to BDT 18.50 on September 22. Meanwhile, Prime Finance 1st Mutual Fund recorded a 50% increase in less than a month, climbing from BDT 20.80 on August 30 to BDT 31.20 on September 22. Market analysts caution that such steep rallies accompanied by unusual trading volume in the absence of fundamental financial changes often signal artificial demand, posing notable risks to retail investors.
