Four people, including a medical assistant, were injured after a portion of the ceiling collapsed at the emergency department of the Phulbari Upazila Health Complex in Dinajpur.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (September 16) at around 12:00 PM. According to eyewitnesses, around 10 to 12 patients seeking medical care and three assistants were inside the emergency room at the time. The building, which is approximately 70 years old, had plastic boarding installed underneath the ceiling. Suddenly, chunks of plaster from the aging ceiling detached and collapsed onto the plastic board, bringing the heavy debris down onto the people inside.
The injured, including emergency department associate Rafiqul Islam, were immediately given first aid at the same health complex. The sudden collapse triggered panic among the patients and staff present.
Phulbari Upazila Health Complex Medical Officer Dr. Sajedur Rahman described it as an unfortunate accident and confirmed that the injured have received treatment. He added that the matter has been officially reported to the Dinajpur Civil Surgeon. Locals have expressed grave concern over the dilapidated condition of the century-old structure and have urgently demanded a thorough inspection and prompt safety renovations.
