Cracks and displacement have emerged at two points under the Brahmaputra Right Bank Protection Project in Chilmari upazila of Kurigram, specifically east of Katchkol Bazar and in front of KD Wari Government Primary School to the south, as geo-bags and block pitchings slide into the river. This ongoing erosion has triggered severe panic among thousands of families, threatening local markets, mosques, schools, madrasas, and arable lands.

During a site visit, geo-bags and concrete block pitchings were observed caving into the river near the shade trees east of Katchkol Bazar and in front of KD Wari Government Primary School. Locals alleged that although the Tk 448 crore right bank protection project was implemented in 2018, multiple block collapses have occurred since then without any permanent resolution, leaving residents in constant dread every monsoon season.

Katchkol Bazar resident Abu Bakkar warned that without immediate embankments, the market could be washed away. Qayyum Mia urged quick construction to save nearby homes and trees, while Shafiul Mia noted that block sliding began under the trees by afternoon, calling upon the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) to urgently deploy protective sandbags. Another resident, Abdur Razzaq, stressed that the erosion threatens local religious and educational institutions. Locals expressed frustration that the Water Development Board (WDB) has yet to provide a permanent fix, demanding prompt and effective measures to protect their homesteads and croplands.
