A severe legal and administrative vacuum has gripped the 5 No. Buramajudar union under Betagi Upazila in Barguna, as the absence of an officially appointed government Nikah Registrar (Kazi) has paved the way for fraudulent individuals to conduct marriages and issue unauthorized registrations.
According to local complaints, two individuals named Md. Mizanur Rahman and Md. Jalilur Rahman have been masquerading as authorized kazis, solemnizing weddings and fleecing unsuspecting residents of large sums of money for marriage registrations.
When questioned, Mizanur Rahman claimed he was initially appointed as the registrar and has not received any formal order canceling his position. On the other hand, Jalilur Rahman asserted that he was wrongfully bypassed through financial manipulation, prompting him to file a writ petition in the High Court, which has reportedly resulted in a stay order on the appointments. Betagi Upazila Kazi Committee President Md. Sohrab Hossain Kazi confirmed that the union currently lacks a legally sanctioned government Kazi due to the ongoing legal battles.
When contacted, the District Registrar stated that because the matter is sub judice and pending before the High Court, no formal administrative action can be taken until a definitive judicial verdict is delivered. Local residents have urgently demanded that the authorities step in to resolve the crisis and appoint a legitimate registrar to end the exploitation.
