Various locations along the vital Natore-Bogura highway, particularly in the Chowgram area of Singra upazila, have suffered extensive shoulder collapses and structural cracks, raising serious safety concerns for commuters and motorists.
According to local sources, the road damage appeared shortly after the completion of the highway's expansion work. At multiple points, asphalt layers have cracked away, exposing underlying soil and stone and leaving the edges of the main roadway severely exposed.
As part of the widening project initiated in the 2021-22 fiscal year, the Roads and Highways Department recently completed the four-lane conversion of the 13-kilometer stretch from Sherkol to Chowgram, though construction on two bridges in Ninggoin and the High-Tech Park areas remains ongoing. An on-site inspection revealed roughly 15 spots with distinct erosions and edge failures, with authorities resorting to temporary fixes like sandbag barriers in several places.
Local residents have expressed deep frustration, questioning the quality of the recent construction work and demanding immediate permanent repairs to prevent major accidents. Meanwhile, Natore Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Md. Azharul Islam stated that he would inspect the damaged sections promptly and take necessary corrective measures.
