The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested five individuals, including prime accused husband Shamim Mia, in connection with a case filed over the strangulation murder of a housewife in Gangachara, Rangpur. The arrested accused are Shamim Mia (24), Saju Mia (50), Afroza Begum (46), Sathi Begum (22), and Aminul Gatia (60). SRB-13 Senior Assistant Director Biplob Kumar Goswami confirmed the information on Wednesday afternoon (September 23).

Prior to this, the arrests were made during operations conducted in Panchagarh and Lalmonirhat on Tuesday night. SRB-13 Senior Assistant Director Biplob Kumar Goswami stated that Sukhi Moni was married in 2024 to Shamim Mia, a resident of the Chillanir Mazar area in Gangachara upazila. A few days after the wedding, Shamim and his family began physical and mental torture on Sukhi Moni demanding Tk 2 lakh in dowry, which led to multiple local arbitrations. On the night of September 11, Shamim and his relatives renewed their abuse over dowry demands.

At around 1:30 AM that night, Kolkond Union Parishad Panel Chairman Shariful Islam informed the victim's family of Sukhi Moni's death via mobile phone. Upon rushing to the scene, family members found dark bruises around Sukhi Moni's neck. Following the incident, the victim's mother, Rowshan Begum, filed a murder case at Gangachara Model Station on September 12.
