Police have recovered the hanging body of a 10th-grade schoolgirl named Mosammat Mahira (17) from Chinguria village in Ward No. 3 of Namula Shialkati Union, Bhandaria Upazila, Pirojpur. Her body was recovered on Tuesday morning (September 29, 2026) from her residence, hanging with a scarf tied around an electric fan. The deceased Mahira was a humanities student at Bhandaria Thana Balika Secondary School and the daughter of Md. Alamgir Hossain, a librarian in the Soil, Water, and Environment Department at Dhaka University.
According to local residents, relatives, and school sources, Mahira's family life had reportedly been experiencing domestic disturbances over various issues for a long time. It was also noted that there were disagreements between her and her stepmother, Sumaiya Akhter, centering around an alleged romantic relationship. However, it is not yet confirmed whether these disputes had any direct connection to Mahira's death.
Mahira's stepmother, Sumaiya Akhter, stated that after having dinner on Monday night (September 28), Mahira went to sleep with her nearly 80-year-old grandmother, Asiron Begum. Around midnight, since there was no electricity, she was told to sleep instead of using a mobile phone. Later, around 6:00 AM on Tuesday, not seeing Mahira, she asked the grandmother about her whereabouts. Sumaiya claimed she then went toward the bathroom and found Mahira hanging from the electric fan. She further claimed that Mahira had an alleged two-year long romantic relationship with an expatriate youth living in Saudi Arabia, and that she had contacted the youth's relatives regarding the matter, which allegedly led to friction with Mahira. However, these claims could not be independently verified immediately.
Meanwhile, sources reported that a note was found on Mahira's study table mentioning a few names and holding them responsible. Authorities noted that it needs to be verified through investigation whether the note was written by Mahira herself and what the truth is behind the allegations mentioned. Some of Mahira's classmates mentioned that she was under mental stress due to family matters, though they were unsure of the actual cause of her death. Mahira's father, Md. Alamgir Hossain, confirmed the news of his daughter's death over the mobile phone, stating that he was on his way home at the time.
Bhandaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dewan Jaglul Hasan stated that upon receiving the news, police rushed to the spot and recovered Mahira's body. The body has been sent to the Pirojpur District Hospital morgue for an autopsy. A case regarding incitement to suicide has been filed over the incident. Police stated that the exact cause of Mahira's death will be confirmed following the autopsy report, evidence from the crime scene, verification of the authenticity of the note, and statements from relevant individuals.
