A housewife was allegedly subjected to inhumane torture and physical assault over dowry demands in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the Boliadi Mirpara area of the upazila. Following the incident, the victim's mother, Fatema Begum, filed a complaint at the Kaliakair Police Station.

According to the complaint, about a half-months ago, Asha Moni (18)—daughter of Ali Akbar, a tenant at Nur Islam's residence—was married under Islamic Sharia laws to Moin, son of Manik Mia from the Chandra Palli Bidyut Bhanga Masjid area of Kaliakair municipality, following a prior relationship. After the marriage, Moin took his wife Asha Moni to live at his uncle Nasir Uddin's house in Boliadi Mirpara, Kaliakair upazila.

As time passed, Moin began pressuring Asha Moni for dowry. Although the housewife's parents tried to meet the demands by taking loans, the torture would only temporarily halt when demands were met. Failure to provide the demanded money resulted in frequent beatings.

Continuing this abuse, on Tuesday afternoon at the residence of Moin's uncle Nasir Uddin in Boliadi Mirpara, Moin, along with his mother Lipi Begum and uncle Nasir Uddin, launched a brutal assault and torture session on Asha Moni. Unable to endure the physical blows, Asha Moni screamed out before fainting and collapsing to the ground. Following the torture, the in-laws locked her inside a room to prevent her from disclosing the incident to anyone.
