A meeting of the Human Rights Journalists Network (HRJN) was held in Pirojpur on Tuesday (September 22) to emphasize human rights protection, legal complexities, and the responsible role of journalists in public welfare. The event took place at the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters Complex auditorium under the 'Defending Human Rights Through Network Strengthening (DHRNS)' project, organized by the People's Development Foundation (PDF) with support from the Human Rights Culture Foundation (MSF).
The meeting stressed the importance of verifying facts, obtaining statements from all concerned parties, and maintaining a clear distinction between unproven allegations and proven incidents when reporting human rights violations. It also highlighted the necessity of protecting victims' identities, personal information, and dignity, alongside practicing sensitive journalism concerning women, children, the elderly, and vulnerable populations. Furthermore, the draft constitution of the HRJN Pirojpur chapter was read out for feedback, and participants emphasized strengthening coordination among journalists, lawyers, human rights activists, and the administration.
The meeting commenced with a welcome speech by PDF Executive Director Md. Rafiqul Islam Panna. It was addressed by MSF Chief Executive Advocate Saidur Rahman, Project Coordinator Sofia Hasin, and Senior Staff Lawyer Nahid Shamsu. Presided over by HRJN Pirojpur Convener Khalid Abu, the event was attended by valiant freedom fighter Shahidul Haq Chan, veteran journalist M.A. Rabbani Firoz, and various other local journalists.
