A human chain was held in Kalapara, Patuakhali, demanding climate justice, a fossil-free future, and a rapid, equitable, and financed energy transition as part of the global program 'Global Week of Action'.
The human chain took place on Friday morning (September 18) at 10:00 AM in front of the Kalapara Press Club. It was jointly organized by environmental organizations and river protection movements, including 'Dhoritri Roktaye Amra (Dhori)', Waterkeepers Bangladesh, and the voluntary organization 'Amra Kalaparabashi'.
The program featured speeches by Kalapara coordinator of Dhori Mezbahuddin Mannu, Kalapara Press Club member Rafiqul Islam Meraj, environmental activist Saifullah Mahmud, and former president of 'Amra Kalaparabashi' Nazrul Islam, among others.
Expressing solidarity with the global initiative organized on the eve of the UN General Assembly and COP31, the speakers demanded an end to fossil fuel financing, the assurance of climate finance, and the immediate implementation of a just energy transition for the people.
Additionally, speakers called for converting the under-construction 1320 MW Ashuganj power plant in Kalapara into a solar power plant. They also demanded the implementation of solar systems inside the vast empty spaces of the two existing coal-fired power plants, as previously promised by the government. Calling upon all strata of society to unite in a social movement against coal pollution, speakers emphasized that transitioning to renewable energy is the only viable alternative to halt environmental degradation.
