Munshiganj District Commissioner Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi presiding over the District Fisheries Sanctuary Management and Monitoring Committee meeting at the DC conference room.

Emphasizing the importance of research and data to justify the expansion of Jatka (hilsa fry) sanctuaries in the favorable aquatic areas near the Padma Bridge in Louhajang, Munshiganj—where shoals have surfaced—Munshiganj District Commissioner Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi stated that expanding the proposed sanctuary in the Padma River under Louhajang Upazila will boost Jatka conservation, natural breeding, and overall hilsa production, contributing positively to the national economy.

She made these remarks today, Thursday (October 29), while presiding over a meeting of the District Fisheries Sanctuary Management and Monitoring Committee held at the District Commissioner’s conference room. Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi, District Commissioner and District Magistrate of Munshiganj, also discussed seeking technical assistance from the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) to gather scientific data on the environmental and economic significance of the proposed sanctuary.

Additionally, discussions were held on presenting the expansion of the Louhajang sanctuary at the upcoming District Commissioners' Conference.

Furthermore, reviewing the mother hilsa conservation drive conducted from October 8 to October 29, the District Commissioner commended and thanked the administration, fisheries department, law enforcement agencies, and all relevant stakeholders for their active role.
