Expressing concerns that unethical activities could spread under the guise of a fair, Islamic scholars (Ulama-e-Keram) held a press conference in Gozaria, Munshiganj, demanding the cancellation of a proposed fair on the banks of the Meghna River.

The participants urged administrative intervention to halt the fair, raising alarms over the potential spread of drugs, gambling, and various immoral acts during the event.

The press conference was held on Thursday evening (October 29) at 6:00 PM at the Gozaria Highway Restaurant. The scholars warned of launching tough movement programs, including a human chain on Friday, if their demands are not met.

The press conference was convened by Mufti Fayzullah, chaired by Shaykhul Hadith Allama Hasan Farooq (Da.Ba.), and moderated by Mufti Moin Ahmad.

Among those present at the press conference alongside local Islamic scholars and media personnel were Maulana Hossain Ahmad Ishaqi, Mufti Nurul Alam Ishaqi, Maulana Belal Hossain, Maulana Saiful Islam Saifi, and Mufti Abdullah Mahbub Qasemi, as well as Khatibs from various mosques across the upazila and local dignitaries.

Speaking at the event, the scholars emphasized that stopping the fair on the banks of the Meghna River is necessary to prevent social degradation, curb drug abuse, and maintain a sound environment for students to study. They expressed fears that gambling, drugs, and antisocial activities might flourish under the guise of the fair, negatively impacting the youth and disrupting the local social harmony and law-and-order situation.

Speakers further noted that the Meghna riverbank adjacent to the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway is a strategic location. They stressed that the potential risks and social impacts of hosting a fair in such an area must be carefully considered. They requested immediate intervention from the administration and higher authorities to safeguard the future generation and maintain law and order.

In his presidential address, Shaykhul Hadith Allama Hasan Farooq said, "We do not support any obscene activities in such an important location along the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. There is a risk of various immoral acts taking place under the guise of this fair, which will ruin the overall sanctity of the area. I appeal to Kamruজ্জামান Ratan, MP of Munshiganj-3 constituency, to take steps to cancel this fair."

He added that considering the local environment and the future of the young generation, necessary steps must be taken to stop the fair.

The speakers announced that if their demand to stop the fair is not met, a human chain program will be held on Friday. They warned that if the demand remains unfulfilled thereafter, even stricter programs will be announced in the future.

When asked about the issue, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gozaria Police Station, Nakeeb Akram Hossain, stated that the local Islamic scholars had met with him regarding their concerns.
