International Right to Information Day 2026 was observed in Rangpur on Monday (September 28) with the theme "Ensuring accurate information in the digital age; the role of the Right to Information in preventing misinformation." Marking the day, a discussion meeting was held in the morning at the conference room of the Rangpur Deputy Commissioner, jointly organized by the Rangpur District Administration, Sonak, and TIB, Rangpur.

Presiding over the event, Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Israt Jahan said that a large portion of the general public is still unaware of the Right to Information Act. Therefore, extensive publicity initiatives must be undertaken to raise public awareness about this law. Addressing journalists, she stated that presenting correct and accurate information to the public is the primary responsibility of journalists. Information must be properly verified before publishing news to prevent rumors or misleading information from spreading. She also warned that legal action will be taken under existing laws if anyone intentionally spreads rumors or misinformation. At this time, she urged government offices to regularly update their websites to ensure transparency and accountability in government work.

Speaking as a special guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Ramiz Alam said that alongside delivering government services and information quickly to the public in the digital age, media and social media workers must play a responsible role in preventing the spread of false and misleading information. He noted that important information for citizens is being published through various government office websites, digital platforms, reports, and other government information sources. It is essential to convey this information to the public easily and accurately. He also emphasized not propagating information spread on social media without verification.
