Leaders of the Rangpur City Citizen Committee held a press conference on the court premises on Sunday (September 27), demanding the immediate removal of prepaid electricity meters and the reinstallation of digital meters across residential households. Addressing the media, Member Secretary Advocate Palash Kanti Nag described the prepaid system as exploitative and burdensome, warning that public dissatisfaction would lead to wider protests if the government fails to cancel the meters.
The committee also criticized negligence by court officials in serving summonses related to a lawsuit filed on July 22, 2026, against the Northern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) and the Deputy Commissioner, which caused the postponement of Sunday's scheduled hearing.
Demanding a white paper on power sector corruption, reduced electricity tariffs, and the withdrawal of false cases against consumers, the leaders announced upcoming agitation programs, including a mass signature drive and a sit-in demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.
