Enraged locals staged a massive human chain and subsequently vandalized and set fire to the homes of the accused brothers, Sharif and Arif, in connection with the sensational gang rape of an expatriate's wife in Charalgi union of Mymensingh's Gafargaon upazila.
On Tuesday (September 22) afternoon, people from all walks of life organized a massive human chain at Kalibari Char area along the Gafargaon-Nandail road. Speakers at the human chain included Md. Abdul Qaiyum, Md. Abu Sayem, Maulana Elias Ahmed Farazi, Moniruzzaman Dulal, Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan, and Zainal. They stated that because the accused in the rape case have not yet been arrested, the victimized expatriate's family is living in extreme insecurity, and demanded the immediate arrest of the four fugitive accused and speedy trial proceedings.
Thousands of men and women from the area, alongside activists from various political parties, participated in the hour-long human chain. Following the protest, agitated locals vandalized and torched the rapists' houses in the evening, following an earlier round of vandalism at three perpetrators' residences in the morning.
Notably, on Thursday (September 17) around 9:00 PM, five youths entered the expatriate's home under the pretext of asking for water. When the expatriate's son brought water, they held the mother and son hostage at gunpoint, tied up the son, and gang-raped the mother. They also recorded the act and threatened to spread the video on social media while demanding extortion money from the victim. Upon receiving news, police arrived at the scene and arrested a suspect named Rajib during a night raid. The following day, the victim filed a case naming five individuals at Gafargaon Police Station. Gafargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman Sekh stated that police were dispatched upon receiving reports of the house vandalism, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining fugitives.
