The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has uncovered the mystery behind the sensational murder of Niranjan Dhar (54), whose body was recovered stuffed in a sack inside a drum in the water near the Begunbari sluice gate area of Mymensingh city. PBI Superintendent of Police Md. Mizanur Rahman revealed the detailed information of the incident at a press conference held at the PBI Mymensingh office on Sunday noon (September 27).
At the press conference, PBI stated that the mastermind and main accused of the murder, Shamim Mia (38), has been arrested from the Gazipur area. Based on the information provided by him, the mortar (shil) and chopper (boti) used in the murder were recovered from his rented house on Sunday morning.
According to PBI's press conference details, the victim, Niranjan Dhar, lived in the stadium area of the city. By profession, he was a goldsmith and the owner of four autorickshaws. The autorickshaws were kept in a garage in the Khagdhor area, where the arrested Shamim worked as a manager, creating a close relationship between the two.
Revealing the motive behind the murder (blackmailing), the Superintendent of Police stated that Niranjan inadvertently recorded an objectionable/intimate video of Shamim on his mobile phone during the visits of a woman to Shamim's house. Using the video to threaten him, Niranjan extorted approximately Tk 2 lakh from Shamim in phases.
Regarding the details of the murder, PBI mentioned that on the evening of September 21, Niranjan went to Shamim's house again and pressured him for money, leading to a heated argument between the two. Enraged, Shamim struck Niranjan on the head with a mortar from the house. When Niranjan fell to the ground, cloth was stuffed into his mouth, and he was hacked with a chopper, resulting in his death.
Describing the attempt to conceal the body, police said that after the murder, the body was stuffed into a jute sack and placed inside a large blue plastic rice drum. On the night of September 22, under the pretext of moving household goods, Shamim loaded the drum onto an easy-bike (mishuk) and dumped it into the water at the Begunbari sluice gate.
The body was recovered on the morning of September 23 when locals spotted the drum floating and informed the police. Relatives confirmed his identity on September 24 using a token of the Mymensingh Hindu Co-operative Credit Union Limited found in the pocket of the recovered body.
PBI further stated in the press conference that the accused's location was identified with the help of information technology leading to his arrest. Legal procedures are underway to send the arrested accused to jail through the court.
