The students' safety has become a major concern at No. 37 Karuna Government Primary School in Betagi upazila of Barguna, as a long-abandoned risky building remains on the premises without any effective measures for its demolition or auction. At the same time, an acute shortage of classrooms has forced teachers to conduct classes for two different grades simultaneously in a single room, severely disrupting the normal educational environment.
According to school sources, the dilapidated structure stands unused next to the main building, yet children frequently play around it. Locals and school authorities report that chunks of plaster and concrete have fallen off the roof on multiple occasions, creating a constant risk of fatal accidents.
Due to the lack of sufficient classrooms, school officials are compelled to merge two classes into one room at the same time, impairing students' concentration, learning capability, and the overall academic atmosphere.
The head teacher of the school stated, "We do not have enough classrooms to conduct regular teaching properly. Consequently, we have to run classes for two grades in a single room. If the government constructs a new building in place of this hazardous structure, our students will greatly benefit, and the classroom crisis will be largely resolved."
The president of the school management committee noted that discussions have been held with the upazila primary education officer regarding the dangerous building, and an official application has been submitted to auction the structure and build a new one in its place.
Local residents expressed deep anxiety, pointing out that students play near the risky structure, posing a grave hazard at any moment. They urgently demanded the removal of the abandoned building through an auction and the swift construction of a new academic facility.
Addressing the issue, the upazila primary education officer stated that the administration has already requested the upazila authorities in three phases to auction off abandoned and hazardous buildings, including the one at No. 37 Karuna Government Primary School, expressing hope for a prompt and effective resolution.
Guardians and local stakeholders hope that prompt steps will be taken to demolish the risky structure and construct a new building, ensuring student safety and restoring dynamism to the school's educational activities.
