A mobile court in Sreebordi upazila of Sherpur has seized 25 sacks of government-allocated urea fertilizer during an illegal smuggling attempt, simultaneously fining two fertilizer-selling establishments a total of Tk 23,000.
The incident took place on Saturday night (September 20) at the Jhagrarchar Uttar Bazar in Velua union.
According to locals, the process of appointing a new fertilizer dealer was underway in Velua union. Amidst this, allegations arose that Sarowar Jahan Anik, son-in-law of new dealer applicant Muraduzzaman—operating through "Messrs Sarowar Jahan Anik Traders" and "Chanchal Enterprise"—illegally sold 15 and 10 sacks of urea fertilizer, respectively.
Buyers claimed they were farmers from Saydabaz area under Jadurchor union in Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram. Having failed to find fertilizer at their local dealer points, they traveled to Jhagrarchar market in Sreebordi. After purchasing the government-subsidized fertilizer from the two establishments, they were intercepted by local residents while transporting the goods home on a motorized flatbed vehicle (botboti).
Buyers reported that despite the official government price of Tk 1,350 per sack, they were charged Tk 1,450. Upon receiving the report, local administration and agricultural officials rushed to the scene and seized the 25 sacks of fertilizer.
The mobile court was conducted by Sreebordi Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Hasib-Ul-Ahsan, accompanied by Upazila Agriculture Officer Mahmudul Hasan Akand and Sreebordi police personnel. The seized fertilizer has been placed under the safe custody of the Upazila Agriculture Officer.
