The hanging body of a newlywed housewife named Rafia Akhter Munni (21) was recovered by police from her in-laws' house in the Purba Kamal Kachna area of Rangpur metropolis on September 21. Munni's family has alleged that she was physically and mentally tortured and subsequently murdered over a dowry demand, less than six months after entering into a love marriage with Parvez Mia. Following the incident, the police arrested the husband, Parvez Mia, and sent him to jail.
On Thursday (September 24) afternoon, a press conference was organized at the Sumi Community Center in Rangpur city, where the victim's family demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the killing, the arrest of all accused, and the assurance of justice. During the press conference, Munni's mother, Rumana Khatun, stated that Munni was married to Parvez, son of the late Mojibor Rahman, five months ago. She alleged that ever since the marriage, her husband Parvez, mother-in-law Parul Begum (60), and brother-in-law Faruk Mia (42) subjected Munni to physical and mental abuse demanding an 8 lakh Taka dowry.
Detailing the incident, Rumana Khatun said that upon receiving news from locals around 7:30 AM on September 21, they rushed to her in-laws' house to find the main door bolted from the inside. Looking through the window, they saw Munni hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf, while her feet were touching the floor. She also alleged that her son-in-law, Parvez, was busy watching TikTok on his mobile phone in another room. The victim's father, Mosharraf Hossain, asserted that his daughter was not the type to commit suicide and was murdered and hung, a suspicion also raised by locals at the time. Relatives further alleged that due to the influence of the accused, police were not taking the case seriously and attempts were trying to weaken it through financial settlements.
Rejecting the bribery allegations, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmul Kader stated that the case sections were filed based on the plaintiff's statement, and the bribery claims are entirely false. He noted that the primary accused, Parvez, was promptly arrested and operations are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects. The exact cause of death will be confirmed once the post-mortem report is received.
