Saidur Rahman, a resident of Khujgipur village in Umarpur Union, held a press conference accusing rivals of assault, vandalism, death threats, and defamatory propaganda stemming from a long-standing land dispute in Osmani Nagar, Sylhet. He presented these allegations during a press briefing held at his home on Thursday evening.
In a written statement, Saidur Rahman stated that a dispute over 130 decimals of land had been ongoing for a long time between his family and local residents Majahid Ali, Abdul Shahid, and their associates. His uncle, Sonaor Ali, filed a lawsuit regarding the property in 1976. Following a lengthy legal battle, the Sylhet Special District Judge's Court ruled in their favor on August 26, 2010.
Saidur Rahman alleged that in July this year, when he erected a signpost on the disputed land, Majahid Ali, Abdul Shahid, and their accomplices vandalized and removed it. Following the incident, police visited the spot and directed both parties to bring their land documentation to the police station.
He further complained that since then, he has faced continuous threats and harassment. In an attempt to defame him, the rivals reportedly created a forged marriage certificate (Kabin) combining his photo with another woman's and circulated fake complaints to local public representatives and dignitaries.
Saidur Rahman said the situation escalated on September 23 at around 8:30 PM when he was ambushed at Umarpur Bazar. Seeking safety, he retreated to his business establishment, Rahman Rice Mill, but the attackers breached the premises, vandalized the mill, and severely injured him with iron pipes and sharp weapons. Three others who came to his rescue were also injured. He further alleged that the assailants looted cash, mobile phones, and valuables from his office.
Locals rescued and admitted him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he underwent treatment for four days.
Regarding the incident, his brother Aminur Rahman filed a case at Osmani Nagar Police Station on September 27, naming 11 individuals alongside 6 to 7 unidentified suspects.
Saidur Rahman claimed that he and his family have been living in constant insecurity since filing the case, alleging ongoing plots to kidnap and murder him. He urged senior administrative and law enforcement officials to intervene immediately to arrest the accused and guarantee his family's safety.
Direct comments from the accused, Majahid Ali and Abdul Shahid, could not be immediately obtained.
