Moushumi Bhowmick Offers Graceful Explanation Regarding Tune Similarity Controversy Over SRK's 'King' Track
Acoustic workspace capturing discussions on musical composition and cross-border artistic influences.

Renowned singer Moushumi Bhowmick has offered a thoughtful and philosophical response to discussions regarding a perceived similarity between the opening notes of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film King track, ‘Tu Mil Jaye’, and her iconic Bengali masterpiece, ‘Ami Shunechi Sedin Tumi’.

Released on November 2 in anticipation of the December film release, ‘Tu Mil Jaye’—composed by Sachin-Jigar, written by Kumaar, and sung by Ed Sheeran, Arijit Singh, and Madhubanti Bagchi—surpassed 60 million views on YouTube within days. Soon after, social media users, including netizen Somatirtho Nandi, drew comparisons online, tagging Moushumi Bhowmick to note an uncanny likeness in the songs' initial phrases.

Responding directly on social media, Moushumi Bhowmick dismissed claims of direct plagiarism with artistic grace. She noted that she hadn't heard the song prior to the tag, and upon listening, did not perceive the exact resemblance suggested. She reflected on musical creation, stating: "We all play with the same notes and permutations... I haven't created some infallible, unprecedented musical phrase that no one has ever used before." Tracing the roots of her own composition, she added that the opening phrasing echoes traditional Bengali Panchali structures. Concluding her thoughts on artistic influence, she remarked, "We all carry shadows of what we know and hear, knowingly or unknowingly. Even if a shadow exists, it doesn't mean there is a direct relationship unless someone has deliberately copied."
