Chinese scientists have achieved remarkable success in generating solar electricity 10 meters—approximately 33 feet—beneath the surface of the sea. According to researchers, this breakthrough opens up new horizons for underwater solar power generation.
Led by senior researcher Wen-Hua Zhang from Yunnan University, the study involved testing specialized perovskite-based solar modules designed to absorb the specific blue-green wavelengths of light that survive deep underwater. Tested off China's Weizhou Island in the South China Sea, the submerged modules successfully delivered usable energy into lithium-ion batteries, demonstrating a viable way to power underwater equipment.
Experts note that this innovation addresses the long-standing limitation of short battery endurance for marine devices. Beyond powering underwater scientific equipment and communication systems, this technology marks a significant milestone in renewable energy research and marine exploration.
