Pakistan claimed to have killed at least 28 militants in cross-border airstrikes targeting Afghanistan's Paktika and Kunar provinces on Monday (September 21), shattering a fragile three-month period of calm along the border.
The military operation follows recent insurgent attacks inside Pakistan, including a militant assault on a police camp in Kohat district on Friday that left 24 dead, as well as a gunfight in Hangu district on Sunday in which six Pakistani soldiers and eight insurgents were killed. A Pakistani official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the strikes in the border provinces, with Pakistan's Ministry of Information releasing the total casualty figure.
Afghan Taliban authorities strongly condemned the action, alleging that the late-night airstrikes hit civilian targets, resulting in the deaths of at least three members of a single family in Kunar province and damaging property in Paktika. Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid warned that Afghanistan would deliver an appropriate response to the aggression, while reiterating Kabul's denial of Pakistani accusations regarding the harboring of cross-border insurgent groups.
