France Deploying 70,000 Police Officers Nationwide to Contain Saturday Protests Coinciding With Halloween

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has announced that 70,000 police and law enforcement officers will be deployed across France on Saturday, October 31, 2026, to manage a third consecutive wave of nationwide protests overlapping with Halloween celebrations.

Speaking in a broadcast reported by French media outlet TF1, Nuñez warned that Saturday could be an "unusual" day marked by a "high risk of disruption to public order" and potential urban violence or looting. The planned demonstrations mark the third consecutive Saturday of civil unrest in France following major rallies on October 17 and October 24.

Highlighting calls by protest organizers for late-night gatherings starting around 8:00 PM, Nuñez categorized these unsanctioned assemblies as "exceptionally violent" and declared that municipal authorities will enforce strict ban orders in city centers. Security forces have been instructed to exercise "maximum firmness," setting up search checkpoints at city entrance routes to intercept potential rioters. However, Nuñez clarified that state protection will remain fully guaranteed for officially authorized peaceful demonstrations to protect freedom of expression and assembly.
