Riverbank erosion by the Dhaleshwari River has severely hit Bara Barta village under Keyain Union in Sirajdikhan, leaving local residents in constant distress. A house belonging to local resident Gafur Sheikh, along with all its furniture, recently collapsed into the river within moments due to strong currents, leaving the affected family helpless.
Local residents reported that intensifying river currents over the past few days have driven the erosion dangerously close to nearby residential areas. Around 15 other homesteads in Bara Barta village are currently at imminent risk of being washed away.
Villagers also attributed the worsening situation to heavy river traffic, noting that 15 to 20 sand-carrying bulkheads navigate the waterway daily, generating waves that intensify bank erosion. Affected families have urged authorities to take immediate bank protection measures to prevent further loss of homes.
Addressing the situation, Sirajdikhan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rumpa Ghosh stated that administration officials have contacted the Water Development Board to initiate swift protective actions.
