DSCC Conducts Major Eviction Drive to Reclaim Footpaths in New Market; Installs Flower Plant Tubs for Beautification
DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam supervising the footpath eviction and beautification initiative in the New Market commercial district.

In a major drive to reclaim pedestrian walkways and primary arterial roads, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) executed an extensive eviction and cleanup drive across the New Market commercial zone.

The operation launched on Saturday, October 31, 2026, led directly by DSCC Administrator Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam. The eviction team completely freed the main roads and footpaths stretching from Gate 1 of New Market near Nilkhet intersection to Gate 4 adjacent to Chandrima Super Market, as well as the commercial corridor extending from Priyangan Super Market back to Nilkhet. To permanently prevent hawkers from re-occupying the reclaimed walkways and to elevate urban aesthetics, DSCC temporarily installed decorative flower planters and plant tubs along the cleared footpaths.

Speaking to media during the operation, Administrator Abdus Salam warned that despite repeated requests, any merchants or hawkers attempting to re-encroach on public footpaths would face immediate confiscation of merchandise and strict prosecution. Addressing hawker policy concerns, he confirmed that hawker demands to reduce service charges have been forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD). Once approved, official hawker rosters will be enforced, barring any unlisted vendors from operating on public streets.
