A Dhaka court has placed former Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam on a four-day remand and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, on a one-day remand in connection with a case filed over abetting the suicide of his second wife, 19-year-old Mariam Khatun.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam issued the order following a hearing after police produced the accused before the court seeking a seven-day remand for each.
The case stems from an incident on Sunday evening when the hanging body of Mariam Khatun was recovered from a flat at the National Assembly Members' Hostel (NAM Bhaban) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. Following the recovery, Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, naming former MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Begum, and two others as accused. Police subsequently arrested the former lawmaker and his first wife, while investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the unnatural death remain ongoing.
