A 32-year-old Philippine national, Keistin Var Bunag, has passed away while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery after sustaining severe burn injuries from a gas leak explosion at an apartment in Dhaka's Banani area.

She succumbed to her injuries at around 3:20 AM on Monday, November 2, 2026, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the institute. Dr. Sultan Mahmud Shikdar, resident physician at the institute, confirmed that the victim suffered 63 percent total body surface area burns, which proved fatal despite intensive emergency intervention.

The explosion occurred last Wednesday morning (October 28) when Keistin attempted to light a kitchen gas stove for cooking at an apartment on Road 7 in Banani, igniting gas that had accumulated due to a pipe leakage. Building manager Al-Amin stated that Keistin arrived in Bangladesh on a tourist visa on October 15 and had jointly rented the apartment for two months with a Japanese national, who was away from the residence at the time of the incident.
