Police Have Legal Right to Use Lethal Force If Context Warrants, Clarifies PM's Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman
PM's Information Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman explaining law enforcement mandates and proportional force guidelines during the media briefing.

Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman stated on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that law enforcement personnel possess the legal right to use force—including lethal force—provided the specific situational context warrants it under strict legal provisions. Speaking at an executive press conference alongside Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmad, the Adviser stressed that all police actions must strictly adhere to due legal process and the principle of proportional force.

Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman highlighted that the current administration refuses to follow past authoritarian suppression tactics, declaring that Bangladesh Police will never function like the repressive force of the previous Hasina regime. While acknowledging that social media videos have revealed isolated incidents of disproportionate force, he affirmed that the government's priority is to handle unrest in a manner that minimizes fear, harm, and disruption for ordinary citizens and youth.

Addressing the ongoing garment sector unrest, the Adviser noted that the government sympathizes with workers facing rising living costs, inflation, and fuel prices, which is why a new Minimum Wage Board was instituted early. He emphasized that while workers initially took to the streets with legitimate demands, third-party instigators have infiltrated their ranks to provoke chaos. With active intelligence gathered by security agencies, the government expects the unrest to subside rapidly as workers engage with the newly formed commission.
