Tear Gas and Sound Grenades Panic Schoolchildren and Parents During Mirpur RMG Clashes
Parents and schoolchildren taking shelter in alleys after tear gas smoke spread into school zones in Mirpur-11.

The ongoing violent clashes between garment workers and police in Dhaka’s Mirpur caused severe distress and panic among young schoolchildren and their parents on Sunday afternoon, November 1, 2026, as acrid tear gas smoke and sound grenades engulfed educational corridors during afternoon dismissal.

The situation turned precarious around Mirpur-11 after garment workers protesting for a ৳30,000 minimum monthly salary torched a police vehicle. To regain control of the street from the metro station underpass to the 11-number bus stand, police deployed tear gas shells and sound grenades, causing thick, acrid smoke to spread rapidly into surrounding residential lanes and school compounds. At HEED International School in Mirpur-11, afternoon dismissal was interrupted as choking smoke caused severe eye irritation and breathing difficulties among primary students. Parents who had gathered at the gate were forced to flee into narrow alleys or seek refuge back inside the school building with their crying children.

Eyewitness Imtiaz, father of a second-grade student, described the scene as chaotic, noting that his daughter suffered acute eye inflammation and breathlessness as dark smoke enveloped the area. Another parent, Sadequl Islam from Rupnagar, recounted how a sudden explosion of sound grenades triggered a stampede among waiting guardians. Nearby retail outlets and commercial markets immediately shut down as foot patrols cleared the streets, leaving a trail of distress among local residents despite the eventual restoration of vehicle traffic.
