Political Consensus Needed for Sustainable State Reforms: Civil Society Leaders
Noted intellectuals, civil society representatives, and political analysts have underscored the necessity of a broad-based political consensus to implement sustainable state reforms and ensure long-term democratic stability in Bangladesh. During a high-level roundtable discussion in the capital, participants discussed the critical areas requiring structural overhaul, including the judiciary, election commission, administration, and law enforcement agencies.
Speakers noted that while reforms are vital for preventing authoritarian tendencies, unilateral decisions without political dialogue could create further polarization. They suggested that the current administration should facilitate inclusive dialogues among all registered political parties to build a national consensus on the roadmap for reforms and the timeline for national elections. The discussants also stressed the importance of ensuring transparency, accountability, and freedom of expression to strengthen democratic institutions from the grassroots level.
