High Court Directs Grameen Kalyan to Pay Tk 666 Crore Tax
The High Court has ruled that Grameen Kalyan, a social business enterprise founded by former Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, must pay Tk 666 crore in tax claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
A High Court bench led by Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Miah delivered the verdict on Thursday (September 10) by discharging the rule issued earlier in this regard.
Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun and Barrister Fida M. Kamal represented Dr. Yunus and Grameen Kalyan in court.
With the discharge of the rule, the NBR is legally cleared to collect the claimed income tax amount from Grameen Kalyan for the assessment years 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16, and 2016–17.
Earlier, on October 4, following the July mass uprising, a High Court bench comprising Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md. Rashed Jahangir suo motu recalled a previous judgment regarding the Tk 666 crore tax demand. The bench had subsequently forwarded the case file to the Chief Justice, who assigned the matter to a newly constituted bench for a fresh hearing.
Grameen Kalyan had filed two separate writ petitions in 2017 challenging the NBR's tax demand for those five assessment years. Following primary hearings, the court issued a rule, which was ultimately discharged by the High Court today after re-evaluation.
