Monayem Hossain (48), a member of Ward No. 9 under Vaina Union in Harinakunda Upazila, Jinhaidah, and also the ward president of the banned Awami League, was hacked to death by miscreants. On Wednesday night around 9:00 PM, while returning home from Moyenkhali Bazar, the miscreants who were lying in wait behind the primary school in Kalishankarpur village launched the attack on him.

The deceased Monayem Hossain was the son of Abul Mondal from that village. Following the incident at night, he passed away while undergoing treatment at Kushtia General Hospital. His body was brought from Kushtia to Harinakunda Police Station late Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, the body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police stated that while returning home from the market on Wednesday night, as he reached the secluded area behind the school, miscreants surrounded him from all sides and hacked him indiscriminately. One of his arms was almost severed from his body due to sharp weapon blows, and multiple deep wounds were inflicted on his abdomen and body. After being rescued in a critical condition and initially taken to Kushtia, doctors declared him dead around 10:30 PM.

Shaheen, Masum, and Faruk Hossain from Abdalpur village, who were accompanying the deceased, stated that Monayem Member was returning home normally from the market when he was brutally hacked midway. In a video, they were heard claiming that people from the ruling party BNP were directly involved in the murder. However, police suspect that banned or active extremist groups of the area might have been involved behind the incident.

Devastated by grief after losing her husband, wife Shilpi Khatun wailed and said, "My husband was returning home from the market, and on the way, he was hacked to death. Today I became a widow, and my children became orphans. I want proper justice for this brutal murder."

Harinakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masum Khan stated that the body was recovered from Kushtia Hospital, brought to the station, and sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy on Thursday morning. Multiple police teams have launched operations to identify and arrest the perpetrators, though no written case has been filed by the family yet. Meanwhile, as the news of the murder of Awami League leader Monayem Member spread, panic and a tense atmosphere engulfed Vaina, Kalishankarpur, Pakhimara, and Moyenkhali areas, prompting the deployment of additional police to keep the situation under control.
