A Dhaka court on Thursday (September 17) granted a two-day remand for six individuals arrested in the Shahbagh area of the capital for allegedly posing as Detective Branch (DB) police officers to prepare for a robbery.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid passed the order following a hearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates' Court.

The remand order came after Investigation Officer Md. Anwar Hossain, Sub-Inspector of DB (Mirpur Division), produced the suspects in court and petitioned for a seven-day remand to interrogate the gang members.

The remanded suspects have been identified as Jewel Mridha (38), Md. Ramiz Talukder (46), Jashim Talukder alias Riaz (46), Md. Rahman Howlader (56), Md. Billal (52), and Md. Maruf (38).

Case Background and Evidence Recovery

According to court documents and the remand petition, the group had long been impersonating law enforcement officers using fake uniforms and equipment to execute robberies and muggings across various parts of the Dhaka Metropolitan area:

• Operation and Arrest: Acting on a tip-off during a regional drive on the night of September 15, a team from DB Mirpur Division learned that a gang had assembled on the footpath opposite the Bangladesh Bar Council under Shahbagh Police Station to plan a robbery. Police raided the location and apprehended six suspects as they attempted to flee.

• Seized Paraphernalia: During body searches, law enforcement officers recovered one toy pistol, a 3.2-inch empty toy magazine, a black toy walkie-talkie, one set of handcuffs, and three jackets bearing the "DB" logo.

• Legal Proceedings: A formal case was filed against the suspects at Shahbagh Police Station. Investigating officers noted that remand interrogation is essential to uncover the broader network and arrest remaining absconding associates.
