Consumers in Dhaka kitchen markets experienced minor relief as egg prices dropped by Tk 10 per dozen over the past week; however, high prices for fish, poultry, and meat continue to strain household budgets.

A market survey across the capital on Friday (September 18) revealed that a dozen eggs is currently retailing between Tk 140 and Tk 145, down from Tk 150 to Tk 155 last week. White farm eggs are selling at Tk 140 per dozen, while brown eggs range from Tk 145 to Tk 150.

Despite the slight reduction in egg prices, low- and middle-income buyers report little overall financial respite due to sustained price levels across poultry and fish counters.

Poultry, Meat, and Fish Market Rates

• Poultry & Meat: Broiler chicken remains steady at Tk 190 per kg. Sonali chicken is retailing at Tk 310–320 per kg, hybrid chicken at Tk 290–300 per kg, and layer chicken at Tk 350 per kg—each reflecting a minor Tk 10 per kg decrease. Beef prices remain unchanged at Tk 800 per kg.

• Farmed Fish: Budget-friendly farmed fish options remain costly, with Pangas selling at a minimum of Tk 230 per kg and Tilapia at Tk 260 per kg. Farmed Koi is priced at Tk 260 per kg, while farmed Shing ranges between Tk 300 and Tk 450 per kg depending on size. Medium-sized Rui is selling for Tk 270–350 per kg, Katla at Tk 450 per kg, and Pabda between Tk 350 and Tk 450 per kg.

• Premium & Wild-Caught Fish: Native varieties continue to command high prices, with local Koi and Baim selling between Tk 600 and Tk 800 per kg, Tengra at Tk 700 per kg, and Shol at Tk 700 per kg. Large Rui fetches Tk 450–500 per kg, while Shrimp, Rupchanda, and river Bele are selling near or above Tk 1,000 per kg.

Traders attributed the daily price fluctuations in the fish market to changing supply volumes, weather conditions, and morning-to-afternoon buyer turnout at wholesale centers.
