Police in the northeastern Indian state of Assam have detained 27 Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, for lacking valid travel and residency documents.

Assam Police officials confirmed that the detentions took place during separate operations in the state capital, Guwahati, and the town of Rangia in Kamrup district. Legal proceedings have been initiated to deport the individuals to Bangladesh.

Deputy Commissioner of Assam Border Police Kulenendra Nath Deka informed Indian news outlet NDTV that the arrests were executed on Thursday following intelligence-led operations by law enforcement units.

Joint Operation and Route Details

• Initial Arrests in Guwahati: Border Police first apprehended 12 Bangladeshi nationals from the premises of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus terminal in Guwahati based on local intelligence.

• Train Interception at Rangia: During preliminary questioning, the first group revealed that an additional cohort was traveling toward Jammu and Kashmir aboard the Jammu Tawi Express. Border Police coordinated with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to intercept the train near Rangia station, where the remaining 15 individuals were detained.

• Geographic Origin: The detainees hail from several districts across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Sunamganj, Gopalganj, Bagerhat, Khulna, and Mymensingh. None possessed valid travel documents, visas, or identity records.

• Motivations and Legal Action: Border Police Deputy Commissioner Deka noted that the group entered India in search of employment opportunities. A formal case has been registered against the detainees, and law enforcement agencies are launching operations to target the cross-border trafficking network that facilitated their illegal entry.
