The Jatiyatabadi Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) held a human chain program in front of the National Press Club on Friday afternoon to protest the recent hike in fuel oil prices.
Speaking at the program, JSD General Secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmud Swapan criticized the decision, stating it was implemented without any effective discussion in the national parliament, public consultation, or public hearing, leaving ordinary citizens to bear the economic burden. He questioned whether the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) operates as a profit-driven commercial entity or a public service organization, demanding full transparency regarding past profits, reserve funds, import and operational costs, and the implementation of a regular, transparent price-adjustment mechanism.
Vice-President Freedom Fighter Mohammad Siraj Mia and Metropolitan Joint Coordinator Kamal Uddin Patwary also addressed the gathering, emphasizing that fuel price hikes severely impact daily life, agriculture, transportation, and general market prices, and urged authorities to prioritize social justice and public affordability.
The speakers concluded by demanding the immediate withdrawal of the increased fuel prices, disclosure of BPC's financial statements, and the establishment of a transparent pricing system centered on public interest, with remarks also delivered by several other party leaders and activists.
