A joint eviction drive has been conducted by the Upazila Administration and Gafargaon Pourashava to free the footpaths from illegal occupation from Mini Stadium Point to Shaheed Abdul Bepari Gate in Gafargaon municipal town, as well as to remove illegally built structures and shops on both sides of Chandni Hall Intersection, Shibganj Road, Kancha Bazar, Madhya Bazar, and Budhia Market Road.

The joint drive was carried out on Sunday (October 18) from noon until afternoon, with support from a team from Gafargaon Police Station.

Local Member of Parliament Mohammad Akhteruzzaman Bachchu and Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) & Executive Magistrate Md. Mahfuzur Rahman led the eviction drive. They were accompanied by Gafargaon Pourashava Executive Officer Md. Arif Akand, Gafargaon Police Station OC Moniruzzaman Sheikh, officials and employees from the land office and municipality, as well as local dignitaries.

During the drive, footpaths, floating illegal shops, and temporary structures were cleared from these roads and intersections, making the footpaths open and accessible for pedestrian movement once again.

Speaking during the operation, MP Mohammad Akhteruzzaman Bachchu stated that such steps have been taken to ensure smooth movement for the general public and to keep the municipal town free from traffic congestion, stressing that no illegal shops or structures will be allowed on government land.

Notably, municipal authorities have been working to ease traffic congestion in the town for some time. Pourashava Executive Officer Arif Akand stated that eviction drives will continue to remove illegal structures and keep footpaths free from encroachment. He added that the municipality is also working swiftly to clear town waste, improve the drainage system, and implement various other development initiatives.
