Bangladeshi wushu practitioner Jinnat Akhter has secured a bronze medal in the women's 52kg category at the Asian Games, despite a first-round defeat to China's Di Wei in the semifinals. Under wushu and tournament rules, both losing semifinalists automatically receive bronze medals, which will be officially awarded following the event finals.
Although outmatched by her opponent in experience and performance, Jinnat expressed joy over bringing home a medal. Following her bout, she highlighted the need for world-class infrastructure and year-round training facilities in Bangladesh, urging the government to build modern training venues so athletes can aim for gold or silver in future games. Jinnat's path to the podium began when she received a bye in the preliminary round to reach the quarterfinals, where her intended opponent, Indonesia's Tharisa Dea Florentina, was disqualified for failing the weight check—automatically propelling Jinnat to the semifinals and guaranteeing a bronze medal finish.
This achievement marks a historic milestone for Bangladesh sports: while the nation has won 14 medals in Asian Games history, this is only the second individual event medal ever secured by a Bangladeshi athlete, ending a 40-year drought since boxer Mosharraf Hossain won bronze at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. Federation General Secretary and team coach Dildar Hasan Dilu confirmed that medal presentations will take place after tomorrow's final matches.
