Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury expressed optimism that a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and Malaysia could be signed by December 2027 to boost trade and investment between the two nations.
He voiced this expectation during a business forum titled "Bangladesh-Malaysia Business Forum: Business Connections and Potential," organized by the Klang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (September 23, 2026) in honor of a visiting Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) delegation. High Commissioner Manjurul Karim noted that recent summit-level talks between the Prime Ministers of both countries prioritized accelerating FTA negotiations. DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed urged Malaysian investors to explore key Bangladeshi sectors, including healthcare, semiconductors, energy infrastructure, IT, halal food, and tourism, noting that Bangladeshis spend $4–6 billion annually on overseas medical care.
To formalize bilateral private sector cooperation, DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed and KCCI President Jeffrey Tan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), followed by 40 business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking sessions. Furthermore, the delegation held a courtesy meeting with Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Tiong King Sing, who proposed establishing an MoU between the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) Malaysia and DCCI to build a robust Muslim tourism ecosystem and world-class healthcare facilities in Bangladesh.
