Abdus Salam (son of late Yusuf Ali), a resident of Miyapara village under Chandva union in Atghoria upazila of Pabna, has reportedly been kept chained for nearly six years, raising widespread concern across the area after the matter recently came to light locally. However, denying the allegations, his family claims they were forced to keep him chained for safety reasons due to his mental illness.
An on-site visit on Sunday (July 13, 2026) revealed Abdus Salam chained in the courtyard of his house. Several local residents stated that he has been in this condition for a long time.
They alleged that he is leading an inhumane life due to family neglect and torture. Although the matter had not previously come to the attention of the relevant authorities, locals have demanded a fair investigation and necessary action following the recent public disclosure of the incident.
On the other hand, members of Abdus Salam's family completely denied the allegations of family torture. According to them, Abdus Salam has been suffering from mental illness for a long time and frequently exhibits behavior dangerous to himself and those around him. Consequently, considering doctors' advice and the circumstances, they were forced to keep him chained. The family asserted that no form of torture is inflicted upon him.

I learned about it through you. I will speak with the concerned authorities to verify the truth of the allegations and take necessary steps. If the allegations are proven true, legal action will be taken in coordination with the administration."
The incident has sparked mixed reactions in the area. On one hand, a section of locals has demanded swift administrative intervention, physical and mental health examinations, and the arrangement of proper medical treatment from a humanitarian standpoint.
Conversely, family members argue that this is not an incident of torture, but rather an unfortunate yet compulsory situation to control a mentally ill individual.
According to local conscious circles, the issue is extremely sensitive. Therefore, rather than accepting either party's statement unilaterally, it is crucial to conduct an impartial investigation through the coordination of the relevant administration, Department of Social Services, and Department of Health to uncover the true facts, evaluate Abdus Salam's mental and physical health, and ensure necessary medical treatment and humanitarian assistance.
