A fourth-grade student named Rima Akhter (14) has allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf from the ceiling beam of her house after leaving a suicide note in Nalitabari, Sherpur.
The incident took place on Saturday (September 19) around 7:30 PM at her maternal grandfather's house in Andharupara village under Poragaon union of the upazila. Rima was the second daughter of the late Ripon Mia from the same village.
According to family sources, Rima's father, Ripon Mia, tragically died in an accident when she was very young, leaving behind three daughters. Since then, her mother, Zahura বেগম, along with her three daughters, has been living at the home of her father, Habibar Rahman, in Andharupara village. Rima studied in the fourth grade at the local BRAC school.
Recently, marriage proposals had been coming in for Rima, but she was unwilling to comply with her family's decision regarding the marriage as she was in a relationship with a neighboring youth. Amidst this tension, she wrote a suicide note and hanged herself from the crossbeam of a tin-shed room using a scarf.
In her handwritten note, Rima wrote, "Mother, please forgive me. I couldn't keep your word. I could have run away, but I took an oath holding your head. If anything happened to you, nobody would have spared me. Would nothing happen to anyone if I died? Mother, you only thought about property, a good household, and money. But Mother, did you ever think whether I would find happiness with him? Even amidst thousands of sorrows and sufferings, I would have found peace because I love him. If you had married me to someone else instead of him, I swear I would have lived a life worse than death. Please forgive me. No one is at fault here. Even then, if you blame him as the criminal, I would not find peace even in death. Sincerely, your unfortunate Rima."
Nalitabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman confirmed the matter, stating that police have recovered the victim's body and the suicide note from the scene while legal procedures are underway.
